Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Arak, then called Sultanabad, weaving rugs for its market. The villages around Arak in central Persia wove Mahal rugs large, with a wide field and generous spacing between the motifs.
