Three stepped diamond medallions stand in a column on this remarkable rug. Red fills the field behind a column of three stepped diamond medallions. The center shape is cream with a red and brown geometric core, while the outer two are red with small leaf forms inside. Camel brown areas with charming feather-like leaf forms fill the spaces beside these figures. A main border runs a zigzag line in cream and rose, framed by narrow guard stripes with green and cream diamonds. The pile is full over the face. Warm red and brown tones form a strong graphic line along a narrow passage. At 3'7" by 7'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Azerbaijan rugs
In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. Persian Azerbaijan covers the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. The rugs were made for houses in a cold region rather than for export catalogs. This runner keeps those angular medallions. The stepped outlines of the diamonds show the geometric drawing clearly. The red ground and the camel accents give the piece a warm weight suited to a long, narrow space.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
