Medium Rugs

Medium rugs cover roughly 21 to 32 square feet (2 to 3 square meters), and most of them measure close to 4x7 or 4x6 feet. It is the in-between size that suits a generous entry, the side of a bed, a small living room or the floor under a round table.

The selection is split between Persian and Turkish rugs. Isparta is the single largest origin, followed by Baluch and Ferdos. The Turkish pieces lean toward cream and rose grounds, the Persian ones toward deep red and burgundy, and most are among the more affordable rugs we carry.

No two are alike: each was hand-knotted in the 1970s and professionally washed by specialists we have trusted for years before we photographed it. Open any rug to see its measured size in feet and inches, with centimeters in parentheses.

The in-between size, and why it is useful

Common rug sizes tend to jump from small accent pieces straight to 5x8, which leaves a gap many rooms fall into. A rug of about 4x6 or 4x7 fills that gap: big enough to hold a piece of furniture, small enough to leave floor showing around it.

Rooms that suit a 4x6 or 4x7

  • Bedrooms: laid along one side of the bed, where your feet land in the morning; more in bedroom rugs.
  • Entries and landings: a generous entry takes a 4x6 better than a 3x5; see hallway & entry rugs.
  • Small living rooms and studios: in front of a loveseat, with the coffee table on the rug; compare with living room rugs.
  • Under a small table: a 4x6 sits well under a bistro table where the chairs stay tucked in.

Finding your exact size

The 4x6 rugs and 4x7 rugs cover most of this range. If the room needs a little less, try the small rugs; if it needs more, the large rugs start around 5x8. The size guide has room-by-room layouts.

Persian or Turkish

At this size you will find both, and they look quite different. The Turkish rugs, mostly from Isparta, have pale cream and rose grounds that suit a light room; the Persian rugs sit on deep red and burgundy and bring warmth.
