About this rug

A dark blue medallion with straight, notched edges stands on this lovely rug. Small geometric blossoms and stepped vines fill the deep red field around a central figure. A dark blue medallion with straight, notched edges holds a small red diamond at its core, with handsome pendants reaching toward the top and bottom. Large corner spandrels mirror the medallion shape, filled with rows of small rosettes on a dark blue ground. The main border is beige, carrying a dainty vine of red and blue flower heads. A narrow red guard stripe lines the inner edge. The pile is low in places, and pale marks reveal the foundation beneath. It suits a room that needs warmth, as the red and blue sit close together. At 3'11" by 6'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Saveh rugs

Local tradition held that Saveh once stood on the shore of a lake that dried up at the moment the Prophet was born. Marco Polo wrote that the Three Magi set out from Saba, the city now called Saveh, and that they lay buried there in three large tombs side by side. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. This rug keeps that mix, with a sharp stepped outline around the center and small flowers filling the dark blue corners. The palette is warm, built on red with cream and dark blue alongside.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
