About this rug

This charming rug has a bright pink lobed star medallion at its center. On a deep red field, dainty curling vines carry small blossoms in steel blue, olive and cream around a central figure. The medallion is a lobed star in bright pink, holding a dense cluster of flower heads in its core. Gorgeous tan spandrels sit at the four corners, each covered with small floral sprays. The main border runs navy, set with a repeat of rosettes in ochre, pink and blue. Thin guard bands flank the main frame. The pile is full throughout. Tight drawing holds the many colors together across the red ground. At 3'11" by 5'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lilihan rugs

The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Lilihan is a village in the Arak district of central Persia, and its weaving is close kin to Sarouk. The field is floral, often on a rose or madder ground, and worked in curved lines rather than angles. This rug keeps that floral drawing and the curved lines, with vines spreading across the red ground instead of stiff geometric forms. The pink medallion sits at the center, surrounded by blue and olive leaves.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
