Every listing gives exact measurements in feet, inches and centimeters. This guide covers the standard sizes and how a rug should sit in each room, and if you’re between two, we’re glad to help you decide.

Why a runner can be wide. A runner is defined by proportion rather than by width: it is at least twice as long as it is wide, up to 5′9″ (175cm) across. That is why a 5′×10′ rug is a runner here and a 5′×8′ rug is not. If you are measuring a hallway, the proportion is what matters, not the number.
How a rug should sit, room by room.
Living room
Aim for the rug to sit under at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs, ideally under all of them. An 8×10 or 9×12 anchors most living rooms.
Dining room
The rug should extend about 24″ (60 cm) past the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. Measure your table and add four feet to each dimension.
Bedroom
Slide a large rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it frames the room and greets your feet in the morning. Or flank the bed with two runners.
Hallway & entry
A runner should leave roughly 4–6″ of floor on either side and stop short of doorways. For a long hall, one long runner reads cleaner than several small rugs.
Home office
Size the rug so your chair stays on it even when you roll back from the desk, usually a couple of feet wider than the desk on every side.
Kitchen
A runner or small rug works best along the sink and prep zone, or in front of an island. Choose a low, flat pile that’s easy to shake out and clean.
Three quick rules.
Measure your space first
Tape out the rug’s footprint on the floor before you buy. It’s the surest way to picture the size in the room.
Bigger usually reads better
When you’re between two sizes, the larger one almost always makes a room feel more finished, not smaller.
Leave a border of floor
Aim for roughly 8–24″ of bare floor between the rug and the walls, so the room can breathe.
