A king bed is 76 inches wide, sixteen inches wider than a queen, and that extra width changes the rug math more than most people expect. Rugs that look right under a queen stop short under a king, and the two sizes most often bought for king bedrooms, 8 by 10 and 9 by 12, sit at opposite ends of "just enough" and "generous". Here is how to choose between them, when to go larger, and what to do in a room that will not take a rug that big.
The numbers
A king mattress is 76 by 80 inches. Add two nightstands at 24 to 30 inches each and the bed block is roughly 125 to 135 inches wide, or 10 and a half to 11 feet. For the rug to show on both sides of that block you need 12 feet of width, which is why a 9 by 12 rug is usually laid the other way, with its 12-foot side running across the bed.
That is the layout that makes a king bedroom feel resolved: the rug goes under the bed and both nightstands, and extends 18 to 30 inches beyond them on each side and two to three feet past the foot.
Option one: 9 by 12, sideways under everything
Lay the rug with the long side parallel to the headboard. The 12-foot width clears the nightstands, the 9-foot depth covers from just behind the nightstands to about three feet past the foot of the bed. In a vintage rug the exact dimensions will vary, so anything from 8 feet 6 inches to 9 feet 6 inches deep and 11 to 13 feet wide works here. A medallion rug is wasted in this position because the center hides under the mattress; choose an all-over pattern or a rug with a strong border.
Option two: 8 by 10 under the lower two thirds
If the room is under 13 feet wide, a 9 by 12 will run into the walls. Drop down to an 8 by 10, lay it with the 10-foot side across the bed, and start it just below the nightstands. The nightstands stay on the floor, the bed sits on the rug, and about three feet show at the foot. This is the layout that lets a medallion rug do its job, since the center of the rug lands where you see it.
An 8 by 10 across a king bed shows about 15 inches on each side of the mattress. That is the minimum. If the rug is narrower than 9 feet 6 inches in that direction, it will not clear the mattress edge and it will read as too small.
Option three: 10 by 13 or larger for a big room
In a primary bedroom over 14 by 16 feet, a 9 by 12 can look like a bath mat. Vintage oversized rugs at 10 by 13 or 10 by 14 cover the bed block with a foot to spare on all sides and reach a bench, a chair or a dresser. These sizes are rarer in the vintage market, which is why we photograph every one we get the moment it comes off the wash floor.
Option four: runners
Two runners flanking the bed, each 2 feet 6 inches to 3 feet wide and 7 to 9 feet long, are the fallback for a bedroom that is carpeted or for a bed that sits on a raised platform. Match them by region and palette rather than by pattern, and leave a few inches between the runner and the bed frame so the pile is not crushed.
Things that go wrong with king beds
- Buying the rug for the room instead of the bed. A big room with a king bed still needs the rug centered on the bed, not on the room.
- Using a queen-size rug. A 6 by 9 under a king bed leaves nothing showing on the sides. It will look like an error.
- A thick rug under a low bed. Platform beds sit two to four inches off the floor. A thick pile disappears under them. Low-pile vintage rugs, which is most of what we sell, are the right choice.
- Forgetting the door. Measure from the door to where the rug will start. Anything within the door swing must be low pile.
Colors for a king bedroom
With this much rug on show, the color sets the room. Soft reds and cream from Hamedan and Kashan warm a north-facing room. Navy Baluch and Turkish Isparta pieces in faded pink or beige keep a bright room calm. If the bedding is patterned, choose a rug with one dominant color and a quiet border.
