About this rug

A herati lattice repeats across the cream field of this lovely rug. Across a cream field, a herati lattice, the fish-and-leaf lattice, repeats in small blue, red and rust flowers with curled leaves. A handsome round near-black medallion sits in the middle, set with red and blue rosettes around a red core, with a beautiful teardrop pendant at the top and the bottom. Near-black corner pieces with blue and red palmette tips fill the four angles. The main border is rust, carrying cream, blue and green leaf forms and gray blue lozenges. An olive band with cream blossom cartouches runs inside it, with narrow red stripes beside. Pile runs low in patches along the top border and the upper left, and the foundation shows at the lower right corner. It holds a room together, as the rust border warms the pale ground. At 6'3" by 9'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Birjand rugs

Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, described Khorasan as almost entirely desert, with its small towns and villages set in scattered oases. He traced the variety of its patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. The main weaving town of South Khorasan in eastern Persia is Birjand, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. Birjand rugs usually show a repeating floral lattice or a centered medallion in curved lines, in madder, ivory and deep blue. This rug has both, a floral lattice across the cream field and a round medallion at its center. The border is rust, set with leaf forms in cream, blue and green.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
