About this rug

The deep navy main border of this charming rug carries red and cream blossoms on a slanting stem. Across the cream field, tiny flowers, hooked devices and small stylized animals gather around a stack of handsome diamond medallions. The top and bottom ones are blue with cream and red cores, while the middle ones are a soft gray brown. The upper corner pieces are deep red, and the lower pair is rose. Red and cream blossoms ride a slanting stem in the deep navy main border, set between red guard bands carrying small blue flowers. Wear has thinned the pile across the center, and the foundation shows through around the middle medallions. The soft rose and cream let the blue ends stand out, giving the rug an older look. At 6'11" by 9'9", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. The Qashqai have the reputation of making the best rugs of the Shiraz district, the brightest in color, with rich blues and reds. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and rugs sold under its name came from the tribal and village weavers around it. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric, and this one shows both in its stepped lozenge and the scatter of tiny flowers and small stylized animals across the cream. The end medallions are blue, the middle ones have worn down, and the lower corners turn rose where the upper pair stays red. No two are laid out quite alike.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
