About this rug

Pale blue spandrels with blue vines fill the four corners of this delightful rug. Graceful curling vines, palmettes and small blossoms in blue, olive, tan and rust cover the ivory field. A handsome lobed medallion outlined in blue vine sits at the middle, filled in tan and pale blue. Its core is pale blue with a small red center, and pendants run above and below. Pale blue spandrels with blue vines fill the four corners. The main border is on a tan ground, carrying a vine scroll with blue palmettes and small rust notes. Narrow guard stripes in cream and blue run along both edges. The pile is full. It brings the cool blue drawing and the warm tan border into balance across the face. At 6'7" by 10', it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. Kashan is the central Persian city most tied to the formal Persian rug. Kashan rugs were made to be the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. Here a medallion, corners and a vine and palmette field are all present, worked mostly in blue. Red is kept to small notes among the blossoms and the border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
