About this rug

Lovely scrolling vines with palmettes and rosettes run across the cream field. Set in a cream field, scrolling vines carry palmettes and rosettes in burgundy, steel blue, camel and navy. Delicate steel blue leaves and navy blossoms sit among the vines, and sage green shows in the larger leaves. The plan is an all-over mirrored layout with no medallion, the vines crossing at the center and again toward the top and bottom. The drawing runs out to the edge, finished by a thin burgundy line. The pile is full across the face, with a few tiny low specks. It grounds a seating group, letting the burgundy and camel notes warm the room while the cream keeps it light. At 6'2" by 9'2", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Yazd rugs

Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, set Yazd in the center of a sandy plain, midway between Kerman and Kashan. He found almost the last of the fire-worshippers of Persia still following the ancient faith there. Yazd sits on the edge of the central Persian desert and has been a textile city for centuries. Weavers there borrowed the medallion and vine drawing of Kerman to the south and worked it in a slightly cooler palette. Fewer rugs were made in Yazd than in neighboring cities, so Yazd pieces turn up less often. This rug carries the vine drawing across the whole field, with scrolls spreading from the center over the open ground. Steel blue leaves and burgundy blossoms stand out on the cream.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
