A muted rose lozenge medallion on a cream field makes this a charming rug. The cream field forms a large stepped shape at the center, set with gorgeous hexagon cartouches and small red, blue and green flower sprays. A splendid muted rose lozenge medallion at the middle holds a near-black cross-shaped core. Deep red spandrels hold the four corners, with large palmettes and scrolling vines. The main border is teal blue, set with small red and cream flower heads, between narrow red stripes. Pile runs low in spots over the cream, and the foundation shows through in a few patches. The pale ground lets the red accents stand clear. At 5'8" by 9'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. On this rug the medallion rests in the middle of the cream ground, with the hexagon cartouches placed in matching pairs around it.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
