About this rug

A loose lattice of leaves and small flower heads covers this charming rug. Over a cream field, lovely brown vines and sky blue blossoms form an all-over repeat with no central medallion. The drawing covers the face in a loose lattice of leaves and small flower heads. A handsome gray brown border carries a scroll of small blue and brown motifs, with a dark brown band and a sky blue line inside it. Pale patches of worn pile show over much of the field, and the foundation shows through. The colors are softened by a light antique wash, though the drawing stays clear. The cool sky blue lightens the warm brown across the rug. At 5'7" by 8'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

By April 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies in the carpet towns of western Anatolia, among them Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula. In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This piece keeps that mix, with a curling vine in the border and a geometric feel to the field repeat. The palette leans warm and faded, suiting the practical sizes made for houses rather than export. Rather than centering on a single medallion, the drawing spreads the pattern across the whole face.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
