One large medallion sits at the center of this charming rug. The pale gray cream field shows faint vines and small blossoms in faded red and gray brown. One large medallion at the center holds loose floral forms within curling leaves, and long pendants extend above and below. Long red-brown scrolls frame the center, and a graceful floral garland runs around the edge. There is no wide border; a narrow band of tiny flowers closes the field. No color is left at strength: a full antique wash has taken the rug to one pale level. Pile runs low in spots across the center, with pale foundation showing. Faded red and gray tones stay pale throughout the piece. At 5'9" by 9'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece keeps that mix, placing a distinct medallion inside a frame of loose, curling flowers. The palette is warm and faded, practical and unfussy like a house rug.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
