About this rug

The lobed medallion of this charming rug holds a rosette at its core. Worked on an ivory field, delicate vines and small blossoms in muted pink and faded red scatter around a central form. A gorgeous lobed medallion sits at the center, its core holding a rosette, a flower seen from above, outlined in soft red. Large vine loops fill the four corners, echoing the floral scatter of the field. The main border is a pale cream band, carrying a dainty scroll of leaves and small flower heads in dark outline, with a narrow geometric band inside it. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pale ground keeps the pink and red from standing out too sharply. At 5'11" by 9'3", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

By April 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies in the carpet towns of western Anatolia, among them Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula. In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This piece keeps that mix, with a round floral center set against scrolling vines. The palette leans warm and faded, bringing the cream, dusty rose and muted tones to one gentle level.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
