About this rug

A scalloped medallion with a soft pink lattice core makes this a charming rug. Small cross-shaped sprigs, thin vines and tiny diamond shapes in muted pink and charcoal scatter across the cream field. A splendid scalloped medallion sits at the center, its core a soft pink lattice with pendants reaching toward the top and the bottom. Faint stepped corner pieces, filled with rows of small diamonds, sit at both ends of the field. The main border is a pale rose pink band, carrying delicate cream rosettes and small blossoms outlined in dark thread, with a narrow band of small diamonds inside it. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the cream and pink to one warm level. The pile is low in places, and the foundation shows through across the field. In a bright room, the pink keeps the cream from looking stark. At 5'4" by 8'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

Kula carpets, from Manisa province, are studied in two periods: the “palace carpet” period from the 17th century to the 1860s, and the years after, when foreign influence shows. Almost every household in Demirci, a district of Manisa, has been known to keep a carpet loom. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. This piece holds that mix, with a stepped geometric core inside the medallion and round rosettes running the border. The drawing stays unfussy, and the warm, faded palette of cream and dusty rose matches the practical house sizes the region is known for.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
