A central octagonal medallion stands in the long panel of this charming rug. The cream field forms a long panel with stepped ends. A beautiful central octagonal medallion in tan, olive and brown sits in it, with dainty vertical sprays of small blossoms rising above and below it. Peach tan pieces with stepped inner edges fill the corners at each end, carrying small geometric motifs in brown and green. The main border is olive green, set with a repeat of brown and tan leaves and flowers, and thin bands in cream and dark brown edge it on both sides. The colors are softened by a light wash, though the drawing stays clear. The pile is low in places across the field, and white specks of foundation show in the green border. Sprays of small blossoms are spaced loosely across the open cream ground. At 5'6" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

About Manisa rugs
The future Suleiman the Magnificent governed Manisa as a young prince for about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520. By April 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies in the carpet towns of western Anatolia, among them Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece keeps that mix, with a stepped star at the center and loose floral sprays filling the open field. The palette is warm and faded, in cream, olive and tan. The unfussy drawing suits a house rug made for daily use rather than display.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
