About this rug

A diamond medallion holds a star shape at the core of this lovely rug. Across a cream field, graceful loose brown vines and small leaves scatter around a central diamond form. The medallion holds a star shape at its core, with delicate floral sprays extending into the open space. Floral sprays also sit in each corner and frame the ground. A wide border carries a handsome lattice of interlocking brown diamonds on a pale ground. A full antique wash has left no color at strength. The pile is low in places, and the bare weave shows through across the face. The tan and beige notes stay easy underfoot. At 5'4" by 9', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The future Suleiman the Magnificent governed Manisa as a young prince for about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520. By April 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies in the carpet towns of western Anatolia, among them Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece retains that blend, with a lattice in the border set against curling vines in the field. The colors lean warm and washed, bringing cream and brown to one soft level.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
