Rows of brown rosettes repeat evenly down this lovely rug. Over a cream field, rows of brown rosettes repeat in a lattice of delicate tan vines and pale green leaves. It is an all-over pattern with no central medallion, so the flowers stretch evenly down the whole length. The pattern runs straight to the edges with no separate border. A light antique wash has eased the colors. The pile is low and level across the face. The dense drawing holds the brown and pale green notes together on the light ground. At 5'3" by 9'4", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula were among the carpet towns of western Anatolia where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies by April 1909. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This piece takes its character from the floral half of that mix, with rosettes and vines filling the field rather than a single center. The colors stay warm and soft, in the cream and muted greens of the Manisa palette. Made for houses rather than for export, Manisa pieces come in practical sizes, and the drawing stays unfussy.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
