About this rug

A lobed oval medallion of rust and brown sprays makes this a lovely rug. Over a cream field, faint gray vines and small rust blossoms scatter around a central medallion. The medallion is a lobed oval of rust and brown floral sprays with a small diamond at its core. A garland of rust flower clusters rings it and fills the corners. A handsome tan main border carries a chain of graceful cream rosettes and curling leaves around the edge. A thin gray and ivory band runs along each side. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. Pile is full over the face. The soft rust and gray notes rest against the pale ground. At 5'10" by 9'4", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing and the pale cream ground, with the rust reading as a soft tone. The wash has taken the colors down to one level, leaving the sprays as faint marks.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
