About this rug

A star medallion of navy and cream sits on the faded red panel of this lovely rug. Cream carries the border zone, and the center is a pointed panel in faded red, scattered with fine vines and small blossoms in pale blue. A beautiful central star medallion of navy and cream holds a rosette, seen as a flower from above. Small navy diamond pendants sit at the top and bottom on the red. Cream ogival pieces fill each corner, carrying scrolling vines that mirror the center. The main border is bright navy, running charming cream flower heads and leaves around the edge. A tan band edges the border on both sides. Pile runs low in spots over the field, and the bare weave shows through where it has thinned. The pale ground lets the soft red and navy notes hold back in a bright room. At 5'3" by 9'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Merchants of 1917 had a name for the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet: “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps the town-rug order and the chalky cream ground, with the red reading as a soft rose rather than a deep red. Navy panels inside the red place a bold block of color against the floral spray.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
