A wide border of cream and rust cartouches runs around this charming rug. A tan and cream field is scattered with small floral sprays in dusty rose, plum and gray brown. A loose lattice of thin brown lines links these motifs across the open ground, leaving no single medallion to anchor the center. The design runs to the border on all four sides. A wide border of cream and rust cartouches carries beautiful geometric stars in slate blue, with a narrow terracotta band at its inner edge. Pile runs low in spots, and the bare weave appears where the wear is deepest. Rose and plum notes stay muted against the light ground. At 5'4" by 9'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. It kept working until 2008. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. This rug keeps that chalky warmth, with dusty rose and plum set against a pale ground rather than dark reds. The drawing stays orderly, exactly as town rugs from this region were made to be seen.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
