A floral lattice of rosettes and vines spreads over this charming rug. The cream field carries an all-over repeat of delicate rosettes and scrolling vines in mauve, dusty rose and gray brown. No central medallion anchors the design, as the floral lattice spreads across the open ground. The main border runs a warm gray with a violet cast, set with a chain of pretty pale blossoms and dark leaves. A narrow beige and brown stripe separates it from the field. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pile is full. Mauve and rose tones sit lightly on the pale ground. At 5'6" by 9'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The story goes that the Yamut, a tribe of Seljuk Oghuz Turks who settled around Isparta, developed carpet weaving there, and that their rugs were known as “yamut” rugs. Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This piece keeps that structured botanical layout on a pale ivory base. The violet and pink tones remain subdued, lending a gentle aspect.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
