About this rug

A lobed medallion of palmettes and vine scrolls makes this a charming rug. A gorgeous lobed medallion of gray brown palmettes and vine scrolls anchors the cream field. Small rosettes and floral sprays in gray beige and soft rose fall across the ground around the center. Faded rose and pale sage notes gather toward the ends and edges, where dense floral clusters and curling leaves repeat the main drawing in muted tones. The colors have softened under a light antique wash that never reached the drawing. Pile wears low in places across the face. The soft brown and sage notes sit gently against the pale ground. At 5'9" by 8'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

An Ottoman report of 1917 notes that carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them. Merchants of 1917 had a name for the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet: “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. This rug holds that gentle palette, pairing gray brown with sage on a broad cream ground. The pattern arranges the vine work around a central lobed shape.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
