About this rug

A floral pattern of scrolling vines and small rosettes spreads over this lovely rug. The cream field holds an all-over repeat of charming scrolling vines and small rosettes in muted pink, teal and gray brown. No central medallion anchors the design, so the floral pattern spreads evenly from edge to edge. The drawing continues into the corners without distinct spandrels. A wide sage border frames the field, carrying a scroll of cream blossoms and dark brown leaves. Narrow guard stripes in gray brown and cream run beside the border. A few patches in the field have worn thin to the foundation. Only a light antique wash touched the colors, leaving the drawing clear. Pale walls let the pink and teal notes hold back in a bright room. At 5'1" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Since 1850 carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages, and it was the Oriental Carpet Company that first carried its carpets overseas. The largest carpet exchange in Turkey in its day was the Isparta Carpet Palace. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the ground stays even at a distance. This rug spreads an even floral repeat over its cream ground. The sage border and muted pink accents show the soft palette at work.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
