About this rug

An all-over lattice of small floral clusters covers this lovely rug. Rows of small floral clusters and curling vines repeat across a cream field in soft brown and gray beige lines. The design is an all-over lattice with no single medallion, leaving the pale ground open between the motifs. A beautiful gray brown main border carries a close pattern of tiny blossoms and foliage in dark brown. Thin stripes with a basic geometric motif frame the edge on both sides. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. Low pile shows in a few patches, and the weave appears there. It anchors a calm space where the brown drawing can rest against pale walls. At 4'9" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing. Here the floral motifs sit plainly on the light ground, and the soft brown lines leave the cream field open.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
