About this rug

The lobed medallion of this charming rug holds sage leaves and pink flower heads. The cream field carries a dense scatter of gray vine and small blossoms around a central form. A splendid lobed medallion in dusty rose anchors the center and holds sage leaves and pink flower heads within its outline. Large floral spandrels in rose and brown fill all four corners. The main border is rose, set with dainty floral scrolls and curling leaves in sage and brown. The pile has thinned in a few patches across the face, with the weave visible at the lowest points. Against the light ground, the soft rose and sage notes stay clear. At 4'9" by 8'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The state-owned Sumerbank took over the Isparta carpet factory in 1943 and backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Until 2008 the Isparta carpet factory was still working, a center of the craft for a wide region. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug keeps that orderly layout, with the blossoms worked in soft rose and sage. The central medallion and corner spandrels follow the Persian layout, and the colors stay light across the face.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
