About this rug

Sage vines and dusty rose blossoms scatter across this remarkable rug. Sage vines and dusty rose blossoms scatter across a cream and pale pink field around a central figure. A handsome lobed medallion in green and mauve brown sits at the center, with small pendants reaching toward the top and bottom. Fine vine sprays and birds fill the corners and curve into the sides. The main border runs green teal, carrying a scroll of charming cream rosettes and leaves around the edge, with brown bands inside and out. Full pile leaves the fine drawing sharp. The floral ground keeps its green and pink tones light against the pale base. At 5'2" by 8'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In the first half of 1911 the company workshop in Isparta wove about 12,318 square meters of carpet, more than any other workshop of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug has the orderly drawing and chalky cream ground of the type, with green and rose set lightly on the pale field. The central medallion follows the Persian layout, but the colors stay in the soft Turkish range rather than deep reds.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
