About this rug

A large scalloped oval ringed by teal boteh makes this a lovely rug. Across a cream field, a large scalloped oval of pale cream ground, ringed by teal boteh and gray brown vines, holds a small diamond medallion at its center. The medallion has a teal and tan floral core, with fine pendants above and below. Dense curling leaves and blossoms in teal and brown fill the field around the oval. The main border is gray beige, carrying a row of delicate rosettes and small geometric forms in dark brown, with narrow bands inside it. The colors are softened by a light antique wash, though the drawing stays clear. Full pile covers the whole rug. The teal notes sit against the warm ground. At 5'5" by 8'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing, with the medallion and corner layout set clearly on the open ground. Teal accents replace rose, lending this rug a cooler cast than many from this region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
