The gray brown diamond medallion of this lovely rug holds a dense floral core. Across a cream field, charming curling vines and flower heads in gray brown scatter around a central shape. The medallion is a gray brown diamond with a dense floral core and small pendants at the top and bottom. Gorgeous dusty rose spandrels sit in the four corners, each holding a spray of leaves. The main border runs gray brown with cream blossoms and scrolling vines. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. A few patches of pile have thinned in the field. At 5'1" by 8'4", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
By 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet export company of the day, had workshops in five places, and Isparta was one of them. In the first half of 1911 its Isparta workshop wove more carpet than any of the others, about 12,318 square meters. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where town workshops wove floral designs with Persian roots in a Turkish palette. Cream and rose lead there, with less of the deep madder found in Persia. This rug follows that gentle range, with gray brown and dusty rose laid on cream. A ring of flowers keeps the field orderly.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
