About this rug

An all-over floral pattern of pink roses and teal leaves fills this lovely rug. On a cream field, pretty repeating sprays of muted pink roses and teal leaves form an all-over floral pattern with no central medallion. Pairs of blue and gray leaves and small dark clusters sit between the larger blossoms, filling the open ground. The design runs to the border on all sides, keeping the layout uniform from end to end. A wide dusty rose border frames the field, plain except for a faint mottling of wear. There are no guard stripes, so the pink band meets the cream center directly. The pile is low across the face, and the weave shows where it has thinned. The soft pink and green tones hold together across the face of the rug. At 5'10" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing, with the floral sprays arranged in tidy rows across the pale ground. The wear has softened the pink border, leaving the teal leaves distinct against the cream center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
