Rows of pink roses repeat in a dense floral lattice across this charming rug. Over an ivory field, rows of dainty pink roses and teal leaves repeat in a dense floral lattice. The pattern is all-over with no central medallion, and small violet blossoms dot the open ground. There are no corner pieces, as the floral drawing runs straight to the edge of the field. A wide wine red border frames the field and is worn pale in places. Pile has worn low in a few patches. Rose and green notes rest on the warm ivory ground. At 5'10" by 9'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
An Ottoman report of 1917 notes that carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them. Merchants of 1917 had a name for the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet: “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing. Here the roses and leaves sit in clear rows on the ivory ground, edged by a plain wine red border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
