About this rug

A large lobed medallion rests in the center of this charming rug. Set within a cream field, a fine hexagonal lattice holds small floral motifs in smoke gray and gray brown. A large lobed medallion anchors the center, enclosing a pale rosette core within its dark outline, with splendid heart-shaped pendants at the top and bottom. Floral scrolls in smoke gray fill the corners against the cream. A gray beige main border carries a scroll of graceful cream palmettes and leaves. Thin bands in dark brown and ivory edge the border. Wear has thinned the pile over much of the rug, especially along the border edges. The soft gray tones keep the dense pattern light. At 5'8" by 8'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. An Ottoman report of 1917 records that merchants knew the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet as “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing and the soft palette. The hexagonal lattice adds a geometric structure beneath the curving vines.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
