This charming rug has a lobed medallion outlined in pale green. The cream field holds graceful scrolling vines and floral sprays in soft sage and gray beige. A beautiful lobed medallion sits at the center, filled with small rosettes and outlined in pale green. Small flower sprays in the corners frame the open ground. The border is gray beige, with a repeating floral scroll, and narrow stripes edge the field on every side. An antique wash, light in its touch, has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. A few pale patches have lost their pile and show bare foundation. Sage and cream stay soft against pale floors. At 5'9" by 9'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. In the first half of 1911 its Isparta workshop wove more carpet than any of the others, about 12,318 square meters. Isparta weavers in southwestern Turkey worked floral designs in chalky, restrained colors, with more cream and rose than the madder reds of Persia. Here the sage and gray beige lines rest gently on the cream, leaving the botanical drawing airy and spare around its central medallion.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
