Scrolling vines in dark green curl around small flower heads on this amazing rug. Over a cream field, fine scrolling vines in dark green curl around small flower heads in pink and pale green. There is no central medallion, only this all-over pattern of curling stems repeating across the whole face, mirrored from the center line outward. The splendid border is pale green, set with pretty cream and peach blossoms and small dark green leaves. Thin guard stripes in dark brown run along each side of the border. The pile is full. The dense drawing in dark green and pink keeps the cream field from reading blank. At 6' by 9'7", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece holds that structured layout in its spaced scrolls and clear border. The cream ground and pale green frame share a chalky range, with dark green outlining the leaves and stems.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
