About this rug

Tan and gray brown floral sprays surround the lobed medallion of this charming rug. On a cream field, large floral sprays in tan and gray brown surround a central lobed medallion. The medallion holds a dense cluster of leaves and blossoms, with smaller matching motifs above and below it along the length. Lovely scrolling vines curve around each lobe and leave the center open. A gorgeous gray beige main border carries a repeating pattern of small flowers in darker brown tones. The pile runs low in places, with the foundation visible at the thinnest spots. The tan and brown drawing rests gently on the pale field, shaped by a muted palette. At 5'6" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug follows that structured layout, with the tan and gray brown sprays resting on the cream base. The gray beige border gives the pale interior a steady frame.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
