Gray brown vines and palmettes cover the cream field of this lovely rug. Dainty gray brown vines and palmettes repeat densely across the cream field, with no central medallion to break the pattern. Small rosettes and curling leaves fill the open ground between the larger floral forms. The main border runs pale blue, carrying a chain of charming cream blossoms. A thin dark brown line frames the border on the inside. Only a light antique wash touched the colors, and the drawing stays clear. The pile is full. Muted brown and blue notes sit gently on the pale ground. At 5'5" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

About Isparta rugs
Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. An Ottoman report of 1917 records that merchants knew the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet as “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug holds that soft coloring, mixing gray brown and pale blue on a wide cream base. The drawing spreads the floral forms over the entire surface in a steady repeat.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
