A lattice of gray brown vines repeats across the whole face of this delightful rug. Worked on a cream field, an all-over lattice of gray brown vines holds small rosettes in brown and pale blue. The pattern repeats across the whole face with no central medallion to break the rhythm. A wide border in pale blue carries a row of pretty tan blossoms and brown leaves around the edge. Dark brown stripes frame this main band inside and outside. The pile is full over the field and the border. Brown and blue tones stay muted across the weave. At 5'4" by 9'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
An Ottoman report of 1917 notes that carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them. Merchants of 1917 had a name for the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet: “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly. This piece keeps a structured, repeating layout. The gray brown vines and pale blue flowers sit lightly on the cream ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
