Gray brown vines scroll around a loose central cluster of blossoms on this charming rug. Over a cream field, delicate gray brown vines and floral sprays scroll around a loose central cluster of blossoms. A garland of larger flowers rings the field, with sprays reaching in from each side. The main border is gray beige, carrying pale scrolls and fan-shaped leaves outlined in thin brown. A pale guard band runs along each edge of this wide frame. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. The pile is low across the center, with vertical streaks of wear down the field. The brown drawing rests lightly against the pale ground. At 5'6" by 9'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
By 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet export company of the day, had workshops in five places, and Isparta was one of them. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly layout and the soft cream tone. Scattered blossoms across the center stay loose and airy instead of covering every inch, leaving the cream ground visible between the shapes.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
