A narrow stripe of blue and red scroll frames both sides of the border on this charming rug. Small rosettes and curled leaves in blue and red cover the cream field in a tight lattice. A large lobed medallion in light blue anchors the center, with pendants at the top and the bottom and an oval core filled with the same lattice on cream. Light blue spandrels curve into the four corners. The main border is red, carrying pretty palmettes and curling vines in blue and cream. A narrow stripe of blue and red scroll frames the border on both sides. Pile runs low in places, mostly along the red border, where the foundation shows. It brings a cool balance to a room, and the blue softens the warm red frame. At 6'4" by 8'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Birjand rugs
Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Birjand is the main weaving town of South Khorasan in eastern Persia, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. Expect a repeating floral lattice or a centered medallion in curved lines, on a palette of madder, ivory and deep blue. This rug brings both: a lattice of small rosettes across the field and a lobed medallion with curved corner pieces. The light blue of the medallion and the red of the border are its two strongest notes.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
