About this rug

At the center of this charming rug sits a large diamond medallion. On a beige field, a fine herati lattice, the fish-and-leaf pattern, in brown and pale blue repeats across the whole ground. A large diamond medallion sits at the center, a broad steel blue band with a stepped edge around a beige inner diamond and a small pale blue core. Around the field runs a pale blue main border, set with graceful brown rosettes, diamond shapes, curling leaves and small blue flowers. Brown guard bands holding splendid oval cartouches and a dotted stripe run along either side of it. Pile runs low in spots over the field and the blue band, and the foundation shows in a few patches. The steel blue band and pale blue border hold back the warm brown and beige tones. At 6'7" by 9'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Birjand rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. The main weaving town of South Khorasan in eastern Persia is Birjand, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. Birjand rugs usually show a repeating floral lattice or a centered medallion in curved lines, in madder, ivory and deep blue. This rug has a repeating lattice and a centered medallion, here a diamond with a stepped edge. Its blue is the strongest color, set against the beige and brown of the lattice.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
