About this rug

Two lovely stepped near-black medallions rest on the deep red field. The deep red field holds two stepped near-black medallions with cream hexagonal cores, joined by a short axis of small diamonds. Cream octagons with blue and orange stars are scattered across the open red ground. Splendid stepped near-black corner pieces fill the four corners, set with small birds. The main border is a wine red band of small rosettes in blue, cream and brown, edged by a cream sawtooth on dark brown. Narrow guard stripes frame it, one a row of blue and red triangles, the other a line of camel boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, along the field edge. A scattering of small pale flecks shows in the red. It grounds a reading corner, and the cream stars bring light to the red and near-black. At 4'5" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tafresh rugs

Tafresh is a mountain town in Markazi province in central Persia. Around 1340 the geographer Mustawfi described Tafresh as a district reached only by crossing mountain passes, with some 13 villages. He wrote that its climate was temperate and its water came from springs and underground channels running in from the hills. This rug shows a bold geometric layout with stepped outlines and strong blocks of color. Two large medallions anchor the long field, joined by a short chain of small lozenges. The saturated red ground and the near-black drawing set each other off, and the cream cores stand out against both. Small rosettes in blue, cream and brown run around the main border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
