About this rug

Rows of octagonal guls in cream, gray and orange sit on the deep red field of this lovely rug. Rows of octagonal guls in cream, gray and orange sit on the deep red field. Two large stepped panels sit along the center line, each filled with diagonal chevrons in gray green, rust and red. Small diamond and cross figures fill the gaps between the large forms. The main border is red, carrying a beautiful chain of cream, gray and orange octagons. Narrow guard stripes of cream and black key figures frame this wide band on both sides. The pile runs low in places across the field. The warm red ground holds the smaller shapes together, bringing a steady geometric rhythm to a corner. At 5'2" by 9'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ghoochan rugs

Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. Ghoochan sits in the north of Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, and the weaving shows it. You get the repeating geometric figures of the northeast rather than the curves of the Persian center, worked in madder red and dark blue. This rug keeps those repeating figures, with the octagonal guls marching down the length of the red ground. The two large chevron panels at the center give the layout a bold vertical line.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
