About this rug

A strict grid of octagonal guls fills this lovely rug. Octagonal guls outlined in near-black burgundy, with cream wedges inside, cover the burgundy field in a strict grid, five across. Each gul is quartered around a small diamond core, and the repeat runs steady from end to end. No central medallion breaks the grid. A handsome deep red border carries stepped triangles and small hooked forms in near-black burgundy. Narrow guard stripes in rust and cream edge the wide band on either side. The pile is full, and paler bands of red run across the field. Near-black burgundy guls hold the warm red field together. At 5'3" by 10', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid, with the guls lined up row after row. The red moves from deep burgundy to a lighter red in bands across the field, and the border stays a steady deep red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
