About this rug

Two large cream medallions on a deep red field make this an amazing rug. A deep red field holds two large cream medallions filled with teal leaves and red blossoms. Each lobed shape centers on a near-black rosette with orange and cream petals, and a small flower sits between them with a charming spray of leaves on each side. Gorgeous gray corner pieces hold angular vines and teal accents at the four ends. The wide border runs near-black, carrying angular cream, orange and red leaf forms in a steady row. A narrow cream guard stripe with a twisted line frames the band on both sides. The pile is full over the face and borders. It holds the red and cream in balance, letting the teal notes cool the warm ground. At 5'4" by 9'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Bakhtiari rugs

In 1909 Bakhtiari tribesmen under the chief Sardar Assad captured Tehran in a successful campaign for constitutional reform. Bakhtiari rugs were made under the patronage of the tribe in certain villages southwest of Isfahan. The garden panel is the signature of Bakhtiari weaving, which comes from the Zagros mountains of western Persia. A grid of compartments divides the field, and each one holds its own tree, vase or flowering plant. This rug is laid out with two medallions instead of a grid of compartments, and its flowers sit inside them. The red ground stays open around the two central shapes, letting the cream and teal details stand out against the warm field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
