About this rug

This charming rug centers on a diamond medallion with a near-black core. Pretty sprays of near-black and coral blossoms cover the deep red field, scattered around a central axis. A handsome diamond medallion sits at the center, holding a small cream rosette within its near-black core. Cream and near-black pieces fill each corner with scrolling leaves and florets. The main border is near-black, set with small red and coral blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in red and near-black frame the edge. The pile is low in places, and white specks mark the worn surface. It brings a warm, grounded weight to a room through its saturated red and near-black drawing. At 5'6" by 9'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. Khorasan has its classic carpets in those of Herat, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Ferdos is in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. The rugs lean toward the curvilinear drawing of eastern Persia, with repeating floral fields rather than a single dominant medallion, and a palette built on madder red and indigo. This rug keeps the curvilinear floral drawing in its scattered sprays, set on a red ground. A small medallion with a near-black core sits at the center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
