About this rug

Diamond medallions and rosettes in a column fill this lovely rug. A column of splendid diamond medallions and small rosettes fills the deep red field. Each diamond holds a cream or pale blue core framed by small flowers. A wide camel panel with stepped edges surrounds the red center, with pale blue wedges at its corners and gray vines between. The main border is cream, filled with angular gray stems and rust blossoms, while the outermost band reads dark brown with small motifs. Narrow guard stripes run on either side of the cream border. Low spots show across the red field, where the white foundation comes through. Structured geometry sets the deep red center against the cream and brown edges. At 6'2" by 10'6", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In the first half of 1911 the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers was in Isparta, where a single agency had about 25,294 square meters woven in homes. Under the name “Isparta quality” the carpets of Isparta were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing. This rug shows that orderly drawing in its column of diamonds and stepped panels. The cream border and the camel panel set the red center apart in clear, angular bands, with the red as the strongest color.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
