A tan medallion ringed by a garland of blossoms makes this a delightful rug. The burgundy field holds a tan medallion, ringed by a garland of muted pink and sage blossoms. The medallion carries a small floral rosette at its core, with pretty flower sprays above and below. A cream band circles the field, its corners filled with large flower heads and curling leaves. A beautiful burgundy main border carries a dense scatter of small cream buds, edged on the inside by a thin steel blue scroll line. Low pile shows in places across the field, where the burgundy reads paler. A light antique wash softens the colors but leaves the drawing clear. It grounds a sitting area, letting the soft pink and sage cool the burgundy. At 6'5" by 10'3", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Merchants of 1917 had a name for the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet: “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. This rug shows the floral side of that work, with a tan medallion set inside a cream band of blossoms. Muted pink and sage flowers sit against the burgundy ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
