About this rug

A cream medallion holding dark brown boteh shapes makes this a lovely rug. Small ivory blossoms and curling vines scatter over the burgundy field. A cream medallion sits at the center, holding dark brown boteh shapes around a small red core. Gorgeous ivory spandrels fill the four corners with large scrolling leaves and a patch of camel brown. The handsome cream main border carries a repeat of small red and brown flower heads. Narrow guard stripes in dark brown and pale sage frame the wide border band. Heavy wear shows across the red, which has faded where the pile is thinnest. The ivory notes balance the deep red ground in a bright room. At 6'4" by 10'8", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

Kula carpets, from Manisa province, are studied in two periods: the “palace carpet” period from the 17th century to the 1860s, and the years after, when foreign influence shows. Almost every household in Demirci, a district of Manisa, has been known to keep a carpet loom. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. This piece keeps that mix, pairing a clear central medallion with a border of soft flower heads. The strong burgundy field gives the soft ivory florals a clear ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
