About this rug

Lovely sprays of pink and pale blue blossoms are scattered over the burgundy field. The burgundy field holds scattered sprays of muted pink and pale blue blossoms on dark stems. A beautiful round central medallion gathers delicate cream rosettes and blue vines within a notched outline. Floral sprays occupy each corner with matching pink blooms and curling leaves. The main border is navy, carrying tan flower heads and scrolling vines around the perimeter. A narrow guard stripe of pale blue runs a geometric key pattern between the border and the field. The pile has thinned across much of the burgundy ground, and the white weave shows in places. Pink and blue accents cool the deep red center of this floral piece. At 6' by 9'5", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In the first half of 1911 the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers was in Isparta, where a single agency had about 25,294 square meters woven in homes. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece keeps that structured layout, with the round medallion and corner sprays in balance around the open ground. The burgundy ground has worn down more than the navy border, which stays crisp.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
